But besides that, there are causes and other factors that can trigger a stroke. Stroke is one of the highest causes of death and disability in Indonesia. Stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is blocked due to blockage or rupture of blood vessels, resulting in the death of cells in some areas of the brain.

Understanding the Causes of Stroke

Based on the cause, there are two types of strokes that you need to know, namely:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Arterial dissection

Hemorrhagic stroke

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, which causes bleeding in the brain. One of the conditions that can increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is high blood pressure or hypertension. Not only that, there are several other causes of hemorrhagic stroke that you need to know, namely:
  • Head injury.
  • Blood clotting disorders.
  • Brain aneurysm.
  • Venous artery malformations.
  • Drug side effects, such as anticoagulant drugs, warfarin, or cocaine.

Recognize the Symptoms and How to Prevent Stroke

The main concept in the treatment of stroke is to provide appropriate treatment in the shortest time possible since the stroke occurred. Therefore, it is important to recognize the initial symptoms of a stroke. The Indonesian Ministry of Health introduces the initial symptoms of stroke to the public with the slogan "IMMEDIATELY TO THE RS" which means:
  • Smiles are not symmetrical.
  • Half of the limbs suddenly weaken.
  • BicaRa pelo or suddenly unable to speak.
  • Tingling half the body.
  • Farsightedness or blurred vision suddenly.
  • Severe headaches that appear suddenly, and impaired balance function.
If you, your family, or someone you know shows symptoms and signs as above, then immediately go to the hospital. Rapid treatment will reduce the risk of permanent disability and death of stroke sufferers. In addition to recognizing the symptoms, you must also understand how to prevent stroke, known as "SMART". Some steps that can be done are:
  • Routine health check.
  • Get rid of cigarette smoke.
  • Diligent physical activity.
  • A balanced diet.
  • Enough rest.
  • Manage stress.
It is important to know what causes strokes, so you can avoid them. One way is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. If symptoms of a stroke arise as described above, immediately go to the hospital to get the right treatment.
